Ajit Pawar Ready to Accept the Election Commission's Final Decision on NCP's Name and Symbol
NCP's Name and Symbol
Pune, September 24, 2023 - Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who leads the rebel faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), firmly stated on Monday that he would wholeheartedly accept the final decision to be made by the Election Commission of India (ECI) regarding the party's name and symbol.
Ajit Pawar, who had previously triggered a split within the NCP by joining the Shinde-Fadnavis government in July along with several other NCP members, assured that the ECI would be the ultimate arbitrator in this dispute. "The Election Commission will provide the final decision... Once the dates are set, both sides will present their arguments to the Election Commission... I will accept the final decision that comes after that," said Ajit Pawar to reporters in Pune.
The rift within the NCP began when Ajit Pawar and eight legislators, including prominent figures like Chhagan Bhujbal, Hasan Mushrif, and Dilip Walse Patil, decided to align themselves with Eknath Shinde's government on July 2. In return for this move, Ajit Pawar was appointed as the Deputy Chief Minister, while the other eight members secured ministerial positions in the government. The Sharad Pawar-led faction, also part of the NCP, responded by filing disqualification petitions against seven of the nine legislators who switched allegiance to Ajit Pawar.
Since then, the legal battle between the two factions has continued. Ajit Pawar has also claimed the party's name and symbol from the ECI, while the Sharad Pawar-led faction insists that the party has not split and that they are the legitimate representatives of the NCP.
Adding to the complexity, both factions have also filed disqualification petitions against legislators affiliated with the opposing faction. The Ajit Pawar faction submitted a petition to Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar, requesting the disqualification of ten legislators affiliated with the party's founder, Sharad Pawar..........
In this tense political atmosphere, the people of Maharashtra and the entire country are closely monitoring the developments while awaiting the final decision from the ECI. Regardless of the outcome, one thing is certain: the political journey in Maharashtra will continue to be a major topic of discussion for some time to come.
